Cooperative Education

What is ‘Co-op’?

Northeastern is home to the world’s most innovative cooperative education program, also known as “co-op.” Now more than 100 years old, Northeastern’s co-op program prepares students for the global challenges of the next century. While on co-op, students in the social sciences and the humanities gain up to 18 months of professional or research experience related to their academic interests with any of more than 2,500 employers across the United States and in 80 countries around the world.

Students who participate in co-op alternate semesters of academic study with six-month terms of full-time employment in positions related to their academic or career interests. Students have the option of completing up to two co-ops over a four-year plan, or up to three co-ops over five years. The Co-op Cycle provides more information on how students alternate class and co-op over four or five years.

The Liberal Arts and Co-op

Co-op makes a liberal arts education even richer and more meaningful, providing students with experiences at home and abroad that help them develop knowledge, awareness, perspective, and confidence.

From a sociology major coordinating leadership programs for a high-technology conglomerate overseas, to a political science student analyzing candidates’ strategies on the campaign trail, to a history major exploring rural Uganda life at a microfinance non-profit, students in every CSSH discipline can take advantage of Northeastern’s signature co-op program.

These connections make the CSSH co-op program an avenue to intellectual and personal growth: adding depth to classroom studies, providing exposure to career paths and opportunities, and inspiring students to delve deeper, sharpen their focus, and pursue greater academic challenges.
